What is in a Spot sheet
The quickest safety check for any detergent is a full, published ingredient list. Here is ours:
| Ingredient | What it does |
|---|---|
| Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate | Main cleaner. Lifts grease and dirt; also found in shampoo and toothpaste. |
| Decyl Glucoside | Mild, plant-based cleaner that's kind to skin. |
| Cocamidopropyl Betaine | Coconut-derived. A gentle cleaner common in shampoo. |
| Glycerol | Helps dissolve dirt and grime. |
| Fatty Alcohol Polyglycol Ether | Naturally derived washing agent. |
| Water | You know this one. About 4% of each sheet. |
| Polyvinyl Alcohol | Holds the sheet together, then dissolves in the wash. |
| Trisodium Citrate | From citric acid. Replaces phosphates. |
| Trilon M | Softens hard water so the cleaners work better. |
Ingredients people ask about
- SLS. Sodium dodecyl sulfate is another name for sodium lauryl sulfate. It is Spot's main cleaner and is also found in shampoo and toothpaste. It does its work in the wash water and rinses out with it.
- 1,4-dioxane. A contaminant that can form when some cleaning ingredients are made. It is never added on purpose, so look for brands that say their product is free of it. Spot is.
- Phosphates. Spot uses trisodium citrate, made from citric acid, in place of phosphates.
- Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The water-soluble binder that holds most sheets and pods together. Whether it counts as a microplastic is debated; our PVA guide sets out both sides.
- Fragrance. Spot has a light Fresh Linen scent. If you react to fragrance, wash a few items first.
What “non-toxic” really means
“Non-toxic” has no legal definition on a US detergent label, so it tells you little on its own. Better signals are a complete ingredient list, a hypoallergenic and dermatologist-tested claim, and clear “free of” statements you can check against that list.

Using sheets safely at home
- Store the pack dry and out of reach of children and pets.
- Use the dose on the pack. More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes.
- Keep sheets in their pack, not in a loose bowl where they could be mistaken for something else.
- If a child or pet swallows any detergent, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 in the US, or your vet.
Frequently asked questions
Are laundry sheets bad for you?
Not when used as directed. Spot sheets are hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested and free of parabens, phosphates, 1,4-dioxane and added dyes, and the detergent rinses out with the wash water.
Are laundry detergent sheets non-toxic?
“Non-toxic” is not a regulated term on detergent labels. Check for a full ingredient list instead. Spot publishes all nine of its ingredients.
Do Spot sheets contain SLS?
Yes. Spot's main cleaner is sodium dodecyl sulfate, another name for sodium lauryl sulfate, the same cleaner used in many shampoos and toothpastes.
Are laundry sheets safe for pets?
Washing pet bedding with Spot is fine once it is rinsed. Like any detergent, keep unused sheets away from pets and call your vet if one is eaten.
